PRE•DOOM
// From Piruz
Ask a room full of producers about distortion and you will get an argument about which one. Which amp, which pedal, which saturation plugin, which tape emulation. What almost nobody argues about is the signal going in, and that is strange, because a distortion does not have opinions. It has a transfer curve. Feed it a loose, muddy, unfocused signal and it will faithfully multiply the looseness, the mud and the lack of focus. The plugin is not the problem. The meal is.
That is the whole idea behind PRE DOOM. It is not another distortion. It sits in front of the one you already own and decides what that thing gets to eat.
// You can hear it, not just read about it
Reading about a pre-distortion processor is close to useless, so there are now six sources on the product page, each rendered three ways: dry, through PRE DOOM, and through PRE DOOM into a distortion. Guitar, bass, drums, 808, synth and voice.
Two decisions there were deliberate. Every clip is loudness matched to within a fraction of a decibel, because it is very easy to make a demo where the processed version sounds better purely because it is louder, and that teaches the listener nothing. Match the loudness and the only thing left to hear is character. And switching between the three stages keeps its place in the audio, so you can flip between them on the same bar instead of starting over and trying to remember what the last one sounded like.
The guitar, bass, drums and voice are stems from our own recordings. The 808 and the synth are synthesised, which is how those sounds are made in the first place.
// What the picture at the top shows
That is an 808 pattern, the same twelve seconds in all three panels, plotted from 20 Hz up to 4 kHz on a log scale. It is the hardest case for a plugin like this, because distorting an 808 is normally how you lose the sub. The bright band along the bottom of every panel is the fundamental, and it survives in all three.
What changes is everything stacked above it. In the dry panel there is very little. After PRE DOOM there is real harmonic structure through the low mids. After the distortion that structure blooms upward, and it blooms because of what was feeding it. Same distortion, different meal, different result.
// Under the hood
The audio path is deliberately kept separate from the interface, which makes the sound model easy to audition and test on its own.
- MASS, BITE, PUNCH and TIGHT shape weight, edge, attack and control
- FILTH, PUSH and PRE set how hard the signal is worked before it leaves
- DESTROY TO REBUILD tilts the whole character in one move
- DOOM TO KNIFE morphs the kind of distortion, dark and thick through to fast and surgical
- Separate low and high bands, so weight and definition are handled apart
- Oversampled nonlinear stage to keep the added harmonics clean
- Transient handling that can harden an attack or let it settle
- Dynamic gate, low cut and high cut for the sources that need them
