Version 1.0.8 shipped as Apple Silicon only by mistake, which meant it would not load at all on an Intel Mac. 1.0.7 had been universal, so this was a step backwards and we are sorry for it. Since launch it had been Apple Silicon only, so it would not load on an Intel Mac even though it should have. Lite stays free forever. ## v1.0.6 Talk Moonshine! 2026-08-08 Stability ### Fixed - Logic Pro and Audio Unit validation. The four preset-style controls are now declared as Audio Unit meta parameters, so hosts can validate them and restore the linked parameter changes they make. - The last memory allocations were removed from the real-time audio path, including the harmony scratch buffers and filter coefficients that were being built during playback. Allocating on the audio thread is the class of bug that eventually takes the whole host down with it. - When a host hands over a block smaller than the maximum it advertised, only the active part of the preallocated buffers is processed. - Added guards for oversized blocks, a short fade on start and reset, containment for non-finite output, and an always-on ceiling at full scale. ### Changed - The output limiter is now on by default for new instances. - Every bundle in the installer is individually signed, notarised and stapled, which is what lets Logic load the Audio Unit without complaint. // macOS only for now. Neither is a criticism of the sound, but it is the kind of thing you want to know before you build a session around one. ## Getting the John Carpenter sound Nobody has written the straight answer to this, which is why searching for it returns forum threads and articles about his hardware rather than anything you can download. So, plainly. The Carpenter sound is mostly a narrow pulse or sawtooth bass, played as repeating eighth notes, with the filter almost closed and a slow resonant sweep opening it. Add a little detune between two oscillators so it beats slightly. Keep the release short so the line stays tight. The dread comes from repetition and space, not from the patch: he was writing to picture, fast, on limited gear, and the restraint is the style. Check the licence before you build it into a template you will still be using in March. ## Using these for film scoring Scoring to picture asks two things of an instrument: that it gets out of the way, and that it stays consistent take after take. Harmony around it is a feeling. Adding voices a third, a fifth or an octave away thickens a part and gives it emotional colour, major for lift, minor for weight. The trick is keeping those harmonies in key so they stay musical instead of clashing. Intelligent harmony tools quantise generated voices to the key you choose, which is exactly how Talk Moonshine keeps its harmonies usable rather than random. ## Doubling: width without chorus smear Doubling is the oldest trick for width: two near-identical performances panned apart feel wide and confident. After many years of building large systems for other people, I wanted to make something closer to my own heart. Something that mixes my love for programming with my love for sound and emotion.
